Waste Less, Grow More!

How to Compost in Any Living Space

We love getting thrifty in the kitchen, turning potato skins into chips, simmering corn cobs for stock, and sneaking floppy herbs into sauces.

But sometimes, no matter how clever we get, there’s just too much leftover goodness to go around. Instead of tossing it all in the trash, composting steps in as the humble hero, turning scraps into soil magic, no matter where you live.

Why Composting Matters (More Than You Think)

Soil isn’t just dirt, it’s a living, breathing foundation for everything we grow. But every time we toss our food scraps in the trash; we’re sending valuable nutrients straight to landfill instead of back to the earth where they belong.

Plants pull goodness from the soil to grow, so if we’re not giving anything back, we’re leaving our soil depleted and exhausted. Composting is the simple, magical way to close that loop, turning your everyday scraps into nutrient-rich goodness that keeps the ground (and your garden) thriving.

Don’t They Just Break Down in Landfill Anyway?

Not quite. For veggie scraps to properly decompose, they need a good mix of oxygen, moisture, microbes, and a bit of warmth.
But in landfills, everything gets packed so tightly that oxygen can’t reach the organic matter.

As a result, those scraps either stay whole for years or break down anaerobically (without oxygen), which produces methane, a greenhouse gas that’s 72% more potent than CO2, in short, this means it’s responsible for fuelling climate related issues.

So, You’re Saving Your Scraps… Now What!?

Awesome move! The first thing to figure out is whether you want to compost at home or hand your scraps off to someone who will.

If you’ve got the space and you’re ready to roll up your sleeves, then let the composting fun begin, we’ve got a super simple guide to get you started right here.
